In accordance
with the SWGSTAIN Bylaws, Section V, the SWGSTAIN membership is organized
into six (6) standing subcommittees that concentrate on different substantive
areas of BPA. These subcommittees are described below.
Business and Strategic Planning
This subcommittee has been tasked to perform business and strategic planning for SWGSTAIN. The chair of this
subcommittee
is Mark Reynolds of the Western Australia Police.
Legal
This group has been tasked with assembling the scientific materials necessary
to support the acceptance of BPA in courts of law at both the admissibility
and trial levels. The chair of this subcommittee is Jeff Gurvis, Director, National Forensic Support Laboratory.
Quality
Assurance
This subcommittee is developing guidelines for a comprehensive
quality assurance
program for BPA that mirrors those developed by other recognized
forensic
disciplines. This subcommittee is chaired by LeeAnn Singley of
Grayson Singley
Associates, LLC.
Research
This group has been tasked with strengthening
the discipline of bloodstain pattern analysis by promoting and nurturing sound
scientific research. This subcommittee is chaired by Michael Illes of the
Ontario Provincial Police.
Taxonomy
and Terminology
This subcommittee has been tasked to develop a comprehensive
classification
system for the organization of recognized bloodstain pattern types
and a companion
lexicon for use in describing these patterns. The chair of this
subcommittee
is Victor Gorman.
Training
and Education
The members of this subcommittee have been tasked with developing
guidelines
for the basic educational and training requirements for practicing
bloodstain
pattern analysts and the basic content of specialized training
courses in
BPA. The chair of this subcommittee is Toby
Wolson of the Miami-Dade Police Department.
